The term Greeva Basti is derived from Sanskrit, where “Greeva” refers to the neck and “Basti” means to retain or contain something within. It is an Ayurvedic therapy aimed at treating neck discomfort using warm medicated oils or herbal decoctions. This therapy involves both oleation (oil application) and sudation (sweating) to deeply nourish and relieve tension in the neck region. With modern lifestyles contributing to prolonged sitting and minimal movement, Greeva Basti at Utpala Ayurdhama effectively addresses neck and shoulder discomfort caused by stiffness, muscle strain, and spinal issues.
Greeva Basti Procedure
- The individual is positioned face down on the massage table.
- A dough ring, made from black gram or whole wheat flour, is prepared and placed over the neck, covering the cervical vertebrae and parts of the thoracic region.
- The dough ring is sealed to prevent leakage, and warm medicated oil or herbal decoction is poured into the ring, bathing the neck.
- Once the oil cools, it is replaced with warm oil to maintain the therapeutic heat.
- After the treatment, the dough ring is removed, and the neck and shoulder area are gently massaged.
Duration of treatment: Approximately 30 minutes.
