Kati Basti

Kati Basti is a highly effective Ayurvedic therapy designed to alleviate lower back pain and related spinal issues. The name is derived from two Sanskrit words: “Kati,” meaning lower back, and “Basti,” meaning to hold or retain. In this treatment, a pool of warm medicated oil is retained over the lumbar region to relieve pain, inflammation, and stiffness. It is especially beneficial for individuals suffering from conditions related to the lower back due to poor posture, stress, or prolonged sitting.

Kati Basti Procedure

The Kati Basti treatment begins by preparing a ring-like structure made of dough, which is placed on the lower back. The dough is usually made from black gram or whole wheat flour. The ring acts as a reservoir to hold warm medicated oil on the affected area.

  1. Preparation: The individual is asked to lie face down on a therapy table.
  2. Formation of the Ring: A dough ring, about 4–5 inches in diameter, is shaped and placed over the lumbar region. This ring ensures that the oil does not leak.
  3. Pouring the Oil: Warm medicated oil is gently poured into the dough ring, completely immersing the lower back. The oil is selected based on the individual’s health condition and is heated to a comfortable temperature.
  4. Soaking: The oil is retained over the area for about 20-30 minutes, and once it cools down, it is replaced with warm oil to maintain the therapeutic temperature.
  5. Massage: After the procedure, the dough is removed, and a gentle massage is given to the lower back area to enhance the absorption of the oil and improve circulation.
  6. Rest: After the treatment, the person is advised to rest for a few minutes to let the body absorb the benefits fully.
